Drought Declaration
Wednesday, May 1, 2024
On April 16, the Department of Ecology issued a statewide drought that excludes areas served by Seattle, Everett, and Tacoma.
Highline Water District receives most of its water from Seattle Public Utilities (SPU.) SPU carefully manages our water supply year-round and looks out months ahead using forecasts and hydrologic modeling to predict possible future reservoir conditions. SPU tracked snowpack closely this winter and decided to start refilling their reservoirs early and is preparing to fill the reservoirs to higher levels than normal. This in intended to maximize our water storage in preparation for the summer reservoir drawdown period.
Based on current conditions and forecasts, SPU anticipates the regional water system will have sufficient water supply for people and fish this spring. As always, we ask customers to use water wisely. For information about ways to save water, visit www.savingwater.org.
